Objective:
Virtual Assistant is a part of artificial intelligence. It is a software agent that can perform tasks for an individual with less human interaction.
Examples: Siri [i-phone], Google Assistant [Android], Cortana [MIcrosoft], Alexa [Amazon] etc.,
Virtual assistants use natural language processing (NLP) to match user text or voice input to executable commands.

- Play videos, TV shows or movies on televisions, streaming from e.g. Netflix
- Buy items from e.g. Amazon
History:
The first tool enabled to perform digital speech recognition was the IBM Shoebox, presented to the general public during the 1962 Seattle World's Fair after its initial market launch in 1961. The first modern digital virtual assistant installed on a smartphone was Siri, which was introduced as a feature of the iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011.

As of 2017, the usage of virtual assistants is expanding rapidly. Worldwide 34% people using Siri, 19% of people using Google Assistant, 6% people using Alexa and 4% people using Cortana. Apple and Google have large installed bases of users on smartphones and Microsoft have a large installed base of Windows-based PCs. Alexa was the first to get the ability to place online e-commerce orders, from Amazon. Gartner [company] Says by 2019, 20 Percent of User Interactions With Smartphones Will Take Place via virtual assistants. According to this chart from Statista, they aren’t about to slow down. Citing recent data from market intelligence firm Tractica, it notes that the number of consumers using virtual digital assistants is expected to rise from 504 million this year to more than 1.8 billion by 2021.
